I am putting in a new floors in my kitchen and in my den. They were both ruined by water damage.
What kind of plywood should I use under carpeting (in the den) and what kind of plywood should I use under cermaic tile (in my kitchen)?
Thanks. |

How about for the bathroom?

Oh the great plywood debate...
I only use 3/4" tongue and groove (t&g) plywood for the subfloor. It should be glued with subfloor adhesive and nailed with a 3" (10d)ringshank nail every 6" in the field and every 3" along the edges. That is OK under carpet or full thickness hardwood flooring.
Under tile there HAS to be a minimun of 1 1/4" of subfloor. There can be a 1/2" of concrete backer board over the 3/4" plywood t&g. That will make up the needed amount. Or it can be 1/2" exterior grade underlayment (not to be confused with cdx exterior sheathing). |
That brings up a question for me, Guru! How do YOU apply the concrete backerboard for tile jobs? When we went to the Home Depot, they told us to attach the backerboard to the plywood with quickset, but they also say that some people will nail or liquid nail it down. What is the best way to attach it?

Not quickset..... Use Thinset which is the same stuff you would use to set the tile on top of the DurRock concrete backer board. There is a lable on each board. Read the instructions. They say thinset too. I have tried to use the construction adhesive, but that is much more expensive than thinset. Ok for a small job or repair but not for a whole floor. It takes like 2 1/2 tubes (10 oz.) for each panel...
Use thinset and the durrock screws that are sold usually right next to the pile of panels. They are rust resistant and have the right size head to grip and pull the panel tight.

I always thought mahogany was the best subfloor material to use..... |
mahogany? Plywood that has a tongue & groove edge is the best now a days. To the best of my knowedge mahogany has not been used around here for sub floor. Maybe for the finished flooring on top of the subfloor! |
I put down a mahogany subfloor in my kitchen in one of my houses, it is supposed to be more water resistant etc.... Tile on top. |
mahogany plywood? |
Yes.... not really though, mahogany solid core I think sounds familiar? This was quite a few years ago now.... it was smooth, though unfinished, and seemed very thin, but I can't remember the thickness of it either. |
