I went to the woodworker's store, and I saw they had 2 different showcases:
Amana Router Bits
and
Freud Router Bits.
Which should I get?
Which is better?
Is there a difference in price?
Does it really matter in the finish?
Is there a difference if I'm using a router table or if I'm using my router free-hand? |

Amana router bits and freud router bits are top of the line in my book. Prices are pretty close to being even but sometimes Amana wins the higher price tag. I use a lot of Freud bits (they are red and I like red) as well as the Amana.
When buying a router bit look for the profile you need first then look at the size of the carbide, this is the part that actually cuts the material. Both these brands have huge carbide while the less expensive bits have real thin carbide which heats up fast and will let the bit dull faster. In my opinion the heavier carbide causes less chatter, lets the bit stay sharper longer thereby producing a smoother finish for a longer time.
I have had great luck with both of these brands! |

Not really as far as quality of cut from the bit. But larger bits like raised panel cutters, or molding profiles etc. can ONLY be used in a router table and not in a hand operated router. They can be dangerous. Read the package, most of the time they will tell you if you can't use the bit in a hand held router.
