| In my area (and this may be different in your area) You go to the fire department and they send out an inspector to tell you exactly where to put them. You could also bring them the floor plan of your house and they would mark where on the plans. For example, here in my area of Massachusetts, there has to be one inside and outside of every bedroom and at the top and bottom of all stairs. |
