Do I need to use primer first on bare walls?

Yes, I always use primer.
I like the Benjamin Moore PVA or Muralo 563. Primer needs to seal the wall, or wood, before the topcoat to prevent dull or shiny spots. It also allows the topcoat to stick much better to painted surfaces too.
