How do I tell if my roof is old?

This topic is available here on The Repair-Place forum I was looking at my asphalt, 3 tab shingle roof and was wondering how to tell if it’s time to replace it or not. Any help will be appreciated. Use the “rule of thumb” method. If you put your thumb over the vertical spaces between the shingles and your thumb can touch the shingle below, then it’s time to replace the roofing. Some of the well known manufactures are: Atlas Roofing, CertainTeed, Elk, Emco, GAF, IKO, Owens-Corning and Tamko.
