Oil Changes

This topic is available here on The Repair-Place forum
I know that the sticker in my van suggests an oil change every 5000 kms, but really, how safe is it to let it go for a couple extra thousand?

Will it really damage the engine, or should I stick to the shcedule?
Most of the newer cars say 3,000 miles (5,000km) if you are using the vehicle under "severe conditions" where most of your trips are under 10 miles (16 km) or in stop and go traffic, or excessively dusty environments. Otherwise, they say you can go up to 7,500 miles (12,500 km). Then again, they want to sell you a new car, too.

Changing every 8,000 km instead of every 5,000 probably wont affect the car for many years. If you plan on keeping the car forever, do the changes more often, if you aren't, maybe let the next owner worry about it.

Good luck!
Just bought a new Ford Fusion and the Ford dealer says every 5000 miles. They use a synthetic oil, and it is supposed to go for 5000 miles (I guess that would be about 8000 KM)
