This topic is available here on The Repair-Place forum | I have recently had a car or truck leak oil onto my asphalt driveway.
I tried using an oil absorbment, kitty litter, but the spot, quite large, is still there. I also have spots that are from a while ago.
Any ideas on how to get rid of them? The driveway is not sealed. |
| There are multiple ways to combat oil slicks on the driveway. Kitty liter will only pick up a small amount and only the 'wet' part. I will list down some of the ways I know to remove stubborn stains. Some work better than others and some are easier to do than others. Try them from the top of the list and work your way down to the more drastic methods.
1- Pour coca cola on the stained areas, and leave the coke sit overnight. Take a bucket and using a generous amount of Dawn dishwashing liquid, mix until you have a good lather. Rinse with the soapy water, and then rinse with a garden hose.
2- Sprinkle a generous amount of Arm and Hammer baking soda. Scrub with a stiff brush or push broom. Let sit for 30 mins or so and then hose off.
3- Put Cascade automatic dishwashing powder on the stain. Leave it for a while (30 mins), then pour on boiling water. Scrub with a stiff brush or push broom, and then rinse with the hose.
4- You could also use TSP. Sprinkle a generous amount of TSP. Scrub with a stiff brush or push broom. Let sit for 30 mins or so and then hose off. (Be careful with the TSP as it is caustic and will harm your eyes and skin. wear appropriate protective clothing including eye protection and rubber gloves)
5- Muriatic acid would be my last resort choice. Mix a mild solution apply and let sit for about 1 minute (read the directions). Then rinse with a pressure washer (about 2000 PSI) As with the TSP, muriatic acid is caustic and will harm your eyes and skin. Wear appropriate protective clothing including eye protection and rubber gloves)
Remember not to mix different chemicals as there may be some bad reactions with some. Wait until the area has been rinsed thoroughly and has completely dried before trying something new.
